Catasauqua Band Entertains

Organized in 1873, the Catasauqua Band under the direction of Vince Suppan continues to entertain audiences in the Lehigh Valley. On May Day (May 1st) the band held its spring concert at Cedarbrook County Home bringing together residents and the public for an afternoon of traditional concert faire such as Rossini’s “William Tell Overture,” “Gold and Silver Waltz” by Franz Lehar, a little Glenn Miller and selections from “Oklahoma.” Bravo, Vince! For concert information phone 484-225-8474.

Marine Band of Allentown – Variety Showcase

If you were at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on 25 April 2010 for the Marine Band’s spring concert, what a treat…Conductor Tom Heinick presented a variety showcase which included “Carnival of Venice” arranged by A. Coppola, “Malagueña” arranged by S. Nestico, “Home Stretch” by Leroy Anderson, and even “Tubby the Tuba” with narration by the band’s own Kent Ruch. If that wasn’t enough, the band impressed the audience with Tchaikovsky’s “Overture 1812” arranged by L. P. Laurendeau and “An American Elegy” by Frank Ticheli. And for lighter faire, the band’s flute section really cooked in “Flute Cocktail.” The program was an excellent preview for the summer concert season – watch local listings. Liberty Bell Shrine Welcomes the Allentown Band

During the American Revolutionary War, eleven bells were sent from Philadelphia to Allentown's Zion Church for safekeeping from the British. One of these bells was the famous Liberty Bell. Zion's Church still exists and now includes a museum dedicated to those times and that wonderful honor - the Liberty Bell Shrine. The Allentown Band presented "Music During the War Periods of American History" and paid tribute to our colonial forefathers ("Selections from 1776"), the Civil War ("Echoes of the 1860s," "Washington Greys") through World War II and the Vietnam War, concluding with a salute to those who served or currently serve in the armed forces. Even Pip the Mouse joined the tribute and conducted the band while children waved American flags.

Shamrock & Thistle

On a beautiful spring-like afternoon in March, Muhlenberg College's Empie Theatre was booked to a standing room only crowd. In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, the Allentown Band presented "Shamrock & Thistle" and featured the Washington Memorial Pipe Band of Valley Forge, PA as well as an extremely talented up-and-coming 9 year-old trumpeter who was an absolute crowed-pleaser. Band member Steven Reisteter composed a beautiful selection and the performance was flawless. Clearnce Weber, euphonium, regaled the audience with his mellow sound in "Gentle Annie." The band's musicianship was unequivocal as exemplified in the final concert selection "Riverdance." And, the grand finale ("Stars and Stripes Forever")... Conductor Ron Demkee graciously shared the podium with the 9-year old wonder...

Special Concert - The Duke of York's Band

AFM member David Diggs, Professor of Music at Lehigh University, presented a recreation of the Duke of York's Band at Zoellner Arts Center (Lehigh University) on Sunday 21 February 2010 at 3:00 p.m. David's ensemble, the East Winds Quintet, along with several university students and special guest "erpent" artist Craig Kreidel performed a mixture of selections of mid- to late-18th century England. The Duke of York's Band, in effect, was the foreunner of the military and civil concert bands we know today. Mr. Diggs holds the title of historian of the Regimental Band of Her Majesty's Coldstream Guards (England) and has been internationally recognized for his research of the music of the English Foot Guards bands of the late eighteenth century as well as band music of the American Civil War era.
